Subject: Disc 1 looks like a mystery show ... and maybe two
I’ve done some poking around and have a few comments about disc 1. Cold Rain, Easy Wind and Minglewood, and the Good Lovin’ > China > Rider > Good Lovin’ sequence, appear to be from a different recording than the Alligator jam. The Setlist Program site comes up with no 1970 shows with the Good Lovin’ sequence, and with three shows where Cold Rain, Easy Wind and Minglewood were played: 08/19/70, 11/07/70, and 12/26/70. I’ve compared these three songs to those played at those three shows and they do not appear to match the versions from those three shows. Finally, the Setlist Program site comes up with no shows where that Alligator jam was played. So I think disc 1 is a 1970 mystery show, and possibly two. My two cents.

If there was ever a confused tangle of sources for a show, this is a candidate for champion. Glad to have'em, though. Thanks for the hard work. Downloading four different versions to sift through at a later date. There's a lot to look forward to here.

Subject: missing soundboard tapes
Subject: missing soundboard tapes
Not much to add beyond all the superlatives posted on other pages/versions by so many fans. It's a truly special, powerful, awesome show. But I wanted to comment of the lack of soundboard recordings for this era. One reviewer elsewhere mentions Owsley being unavailable, presumably because of serving time for his (more major) bust. But he actually was out of jail for a month or so-June- ("Bear" page 134), yet still was probably not with the band on the east coast for this show, I'll speculate.
Regardless, I heard (or read) in the '70s and '80s that the reason there is a 9 or 10 month period in 1970 with mostly no soundboard tapes was NOT because the band wasn't recording the shows, but because the master tapes were stolen, or lost...or both...in late '70 or early '71. I think this was mentioned in Hank Harrison's first "Dead Book", but I can't be sure, and my copy is long gone. If anyone can confirm or dispute this with better, solid information, that would be great.
This show has an aura of timelessness about it. What a jeweled relic! Hats off to Ken and Judy Lee! We are all so indebted to you.

I've never seen this confirmed of the 6/24/70 early show set list. After hearing it, it definitely sounds like it is that show. That means Attics was played 3 times, once acoustic and two electric, between the early and late shows.

Men And My Uncle - right after Bobby starts singing you can hear a gunshot - very clear. Audience laughs Bobby pauses a bit and everything quickly returns to normal - if that is a term that applies for an insane Night of Dead. I was at the show but don't recall this moment. I gotta hope it was a starter pistol or a blank. But it was loud!
BTW the second Dark Star is really sweet and very unique.

This show is fantastic, just wish there was a better recording available. Thank for what is here though, I know it's a long time ago...

Ferocious--but short--house-tearing-down Other One.
Perhaps the very best Attics.
My favorite Cold Rain & Snow.
Too bad no Portchester boards...
5-star performance
1-star SQ

This show is awesome! Not great sound quality, but amazing setlist. They weave in and out so much, not enough bands do this kind of thing!
